Police said the accident took place around 4.45pm when the accused driver, Rahul, 28, a resident of Kishangarh in IT Park area, was returning home from Jayanti Majri, Mohali, in his Maruti SX-4 car. At the time of the crash, Rahul was alone in the vehicle. Police said he appeared to be under the influence of some kind of intoxication, although only a medical examination would confirm this.
When Rahul reached the turn going towards Sector 5 before Hira Singh Chowk, his car hit an e-rickshaw carrying passengers from behind. After the impact, he lost control of the vehicle and also struck a cyclist and a Maruti Baleno coming from the Hira Singh Chowk side. After crashing into the e-rickshaw, cyclist and Baleno, Rahul continued driving and took a turn from Sector 5, hitting another car heading towards Hira Singh Chowk.
